Why Heat Pump Sizing Matters More Than You Might Think

VBy Vivion TeamOctober 14, 2026 · 12:20 pm

When people shop for a heat pump, the conversation usually starts with brands and features. But one of the biggest factors in how comfortable your home feels is something much less glamorous: whether the heat pump is the right size for your house.

Here is a plain-language look at what sizing means, why it matters, and how Vivion Energy approaches it.

What “sizing” actually means

Sizing is about matching a heat pump’s output to how much heating and cooling your home actually needs. That need depends on things like how well the house is insulated, its windows, its layout, and how leaky the ducts are. Two homes of the same square footage can need quite different equipment.

Heat pump capacity is often described in “tons.” For ducted (central) systems, Vivion installs sizes typically from 2 to 5 tons, depending on the home. Ductless systems come in single-zone and multi-zone options, which means one indoor unit for one space or several units for several rooms.

Why a poor match can cause problems

Natural Resources Canada publishes an Air-Source Heat Pump Sizing and Selection Guide for designers and renovation contractors. According to the guide, cycling (a system switching on and off more often than it should) can degrade performance and cause comfort swings in the home. It also says that careful sizing and controls are especially important for multi-zone systems.

In everyday terms, a poorly matched system may mean:

  • Uneven comfort: some rooms feel too warm or too cool, or temperatures swing during the day.
  • Lower efficiency: a system that cycles a lot may not run as efficiently as it could.
  • Cold-weather limits: the same guide notes that a full replacement typically needs a plan for the coldest days, such as a backup heat source.

The guide also points out that comfort problems do not always come from the equipment size. Duct leaks, clogged filters or gaps in the home’s envelope (the walls, roof, windows and doors that hold in heat) can be the cause. That is a good reminder that sizing is about the whole home, not just the unit.

How the size is worked out

NRCan’s guide describes several ways to estimate a home’s design heating and cooling load, the amount of heating or cooling needed on the coldest and hottest design days. These include a formal load calculation, estimates from an energy audit, energy modelling, and, as a last resort, looking at the capacity of the equipment already in the home.

The takeaway for homeowners is simple: a good size comes from looking at your home, not from guessing or copying what a neighbour has.

How Vivion approaches it

At Vivion, a heat pump sizing audit is part of the heat pump process, and sizing is confirmed during your free consultation. We do not recommend a size before that step, because the right answer depends on your home.

Our project process has four steps:

  1. Request your free consultation.
  2. Receive updates and confirmation as your project is planned.
  3. Professional installation by our team.
  4. Enjoy energy efficiency in your home.

Timelines vary by project and are confirmed during the consultation. Vivion also offers optional extended warranties for ducted and ductless heat pumps and for water heaters, and payment and financing options are available. Details are discussed during your consultation, and product warranties come from the manufacturer and follow the manufacturer’s terms.

Questions worth asking about any heat pump quote

  • How was the size chosen for my home?
  • Is a ducted or ductless system a better fit for how my home is laid out?
  • If I have several zones, how will the controls be set up?
  • What are the warranty terms, and where are they written down?

These questions apply no matter who you work with, and a clear answer to each is a good sign.
